Houghton Hall & Gardens Norfolk

Sightseeing attraction | King's Lynn | England | United Kingdom

Houghton Hall & Gardens near King's Lynn, Norfolk, is an outstanding example of Palladian architecture and was built in the 1720s for Sir Robert Walpole, the first Prime Minister of Great Britain. Today, it serves as the residence of the 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley, a descendant of Walpole, and his family.

Architecture and Interior Design

The mansion was designed by architects James Gibbs and Colen Campbell and is distinguished by its elegant facade and symmetrical layout, typical of the Palladian style. The interiors were richly decorated by William Kent, reflecting the wealth and power of Walpole. Particularly notable are the opulent ceiling paintings, intricate plasterwork, and exquisite furnishings that preserve the splendor of the early 18th century.

Gardens and Parkland

The award-winning, five-acre walled gardens of Houghton Hall are divided into various themed areas, including a formal rose garden, a Mediterranean garden, and a kitchen garden with espalier fruit trees. The gardens are known for their architectural highlights and offer visitors a diverse botanical experience.

The surrounding parkland was designed in the 18th century by Charles Bridgeman and includes extensive lawns, woodlands, and avenues. A special attraction is the herd of white fallow deer that roam freely in the park, adding to the picturesque backdrop.

Contemporary Art and Sculptures

In recent years, Houghton Hall has built an impressive collection of contemporary sculptures by internationally recognized artists. Many of these works were commissioned specifically for the estate and blend harmoniously with the historical surroundings. A notable example is the "Skyspace" by American artist James Turrell, the first work installed in this collection in 2000.

Model Soldier Museum

Located in the former stable building of Houghton Hall is the Model Soldier Museum, housing the Cholmondeley collection of toy soldiers. This collection, considered one of the largest private collections of its kind, includes approximately 20,000 figures and provides insights into military history and craftsmanship.

Events and Activities

Houghton Hall is not only known for its architecture and gardens but also for a variety of events held throughout the year. These include art exhibitions, garden tours, and the Houghton International Horse Trials, a prestigious equestrian event held annually in May in the estate's park since 2007.

A visit to Houghton Hall & Gardens offers a unique combination of historical splendor, artistically designed gardens, and contemporary art, creating an unparalleled cultural experience.

Absolutely delighted with the visit. Haven't viewed the Gardens (did left it for the next time), but half of all the fields, lands around the house i did. I think i saw the most of "Adult" male statues... Interesting. In the café I got carrot cake and incredibly tasty sausage roll. There is the one-way drive and located straight ahead from the Haughton white houses.

Do not miss a visit to Houghton Hall. Due to close for the winter at the end of October. See Anthony Gormley's exhibition and the white deer wandering the estate. The House itself is a must. A wealth of treasure to be seen. Book in advance. Ample parking.

Spectacular estate and household. Spent most of the day here viewing the art installations, walking the grounds and then visited the main house. Well worth the time. Incredible depth of history curated by people invested in the future of the estate.

Really lovely old fashioned estate with park land. Stunning old trees. House is great too, ask for the lift if you need it, that's an experience in itself!

Tha Walled garden well worth a visit. The whole garden is very beautiful and full of interesting things. One of my favourite was the water fountain ⛲ with fire 🔥 on top of it. The fire is coming out of the water. 😉 In the huge park you can see a lots of white fallow deer 🦌. Currently the is an Antony Gormley exhibition in the park.

Far but fantastic ! The gardens & permanent sculpture installations are beautiful & if your lucky to catch something like the Gormley installation your in for threat. They skyspace by Turrell had no special lighting to my knowledge but great experience getting into. Not the best sky day thou… The Cragg is fantastic. There a very cool fire inside water piece that I also loved.

Amazing Antony Gormley Exhibition and grounds. The walled gardens were inspiring. Only niggle was the queue to the cafe which whilst probably means food is excellent, it never moved so we went elsewhere. Maybe little kiosks or coffee trucks around the grounds would be an idea? Well recommend a visit.

Beautiful place, Magdalena glass sculpture in the gallery absolutely stunning.. Anthony gormley time horizon captivating... one disappointment was the gift shop...no art materials... not so much as a sketch book. Very frustrating to be inspired and nothing to draw on or with.

A large estate, stately home, deer park and walled garden. We visited the garden in late August and saw lots of fruit, dahlias in flower, sunflowers, and glorious long beds.

Possibly peak raving, one the best organised programmes and executed festival you could imagine.

It seems that everything was too much of an effort, with the owners perhaps relying too heavily on the volunteers to do the work. The gift shop was a laugh, a few non related table cloths and tea towels, and some young children’s books covered over 60% of the shop. The volunteers inside the Hall were not forthcoming on any information about the rooms without being prompted.

Well worth a visit. The grounds and the estate as well kept and have some beautiful views. The walled garden is exquisitely maintained with a broad mix of plants. The house itself has some spectacular rooms. Not my favourite style or era but a great example and enough info to make the visit informative. Friendly and informed staff. We got to see the Anthony Gormley exhibit which was unique.

Now home of the Marquess of Cholmondeley, the imposing Houghton Hall in Norfolk was built in the 1720s for Britain’s first prime minister, Sir Robert Walpole. In contrast, Houghton West Lodge, one of four gatehouses on the edge of the estate, was added in 1840 and measures just six metres by six metres: sufficient for a compact double bedroom, sitting room, kitchen and bathroom. Leased to and restored by the Landmark Trust, it’s a good base from which to explore Houghton’s outstanding gardens and world-class sculpture park, which contain site-specific installations by Tony Cragg, Anya Gallaccio, Jeppe Hein, Anish Kapoor, Ryan Gander, Sean Scully, James Turrell and Rachel Whiteread plus, this summer, an exhibition of works by Antony Gormley. Four-night rentals from £364; landmarktrust.org.uk
